Ted and Bob's Swedetown Tours

Route: down Lakeshore Drive, exit on to Michigan Ave.

Turn right on Chicago Ave. at the Water Tower

Turn left on State to Holy Name, then right on Superior

First site: Superior between LaSalle & Wells: Old Immanuel was on the north side near LaSalle

Proceed on Superior to Sedgewick, right past Chicago Ave. to second site: St. Ansgars Episcopal. (right side, midblock) Look southwest down along Chicago Ave: the site of Eisling Norwegian church ( the original Immanuel school)

Turn right from Sedgewick on Locust, then left on Orleans to Walton: pull into St. Lukes: this is Northside Mission Church site, a real "cradle of the Covenant"

Proceed up Orleans to Oak: to the left 1 & 1/2 blocks will be the Baptist site (street closed but was on the south side, midblock)

One more block up Orleans to Wendell: to the left one block is the site of Immanuel, now in Seward Park ballfield area. It faced east. A better view while driving might be to proceed north a block to St. Joseph's Catholic church and west on Hill to the park.

Return southward on Orleans to Oak, go left to Oak and Orleans. Here is the United Methodist Church on its original site (how about joining in their worship some Sunday?)

Continue one block further on Oak, turn right on Franklin to Walton; just beyond Walton is the Franklin Street Missionhouse site on the west side, midblock. (note Kiki's Bistro and a Latino restaurant on Franklin)

Continue down Franklin to Chestnut: look for "Open Books" on the corner: a good place to stop. Proceed to Chicago Ave. Here is the "L" station.

Go east on Chicago Ave. to Wells: turn left past Moody Bible Institute. The Moody church was on the corner of Chicago and LaSalle, which is now Moody's bookstore. Chicago Ave. has many old buildings; here were located Bush Hall and a snus factory selling several hundred pounds a week.

Proceed up Wells to Oak: this corner was J.G. Princell's address

Right on Oak to Michigan Ave. On this stretch were located the Free church Oak Street Mission (Chicago-Bladet) and Missions-Wannen offices.

Return home at driver's preference of routes (Division St. crosses Goose Island and accesses the Kennedy)

You will notice there are still quite a few churches in old Swedetown
